The global positioning Audi navigation system helps the driver get to their chosen destination. An in-car computer processes GPS signals and determines the car's position with reference to an electronic highway map. Information and directions are announced audibly and shown in the driver's line of sight within the driver information system display. Note: The Audi navigation system depends upon signals from the worldwide global positioning satellite network. The vehicle's electrical system, and existing wireless and satellite technologies, must be available and operating properly for the system to function. The system is designed to provide you with suggested routes in locating addresses, destinations, and other points of interest. Changes in street names, construction zones, traffic flow, points of interest or other road changes are beyond the control of Audi of America, Inc. Complete detailed mapping of lanes, roads, streets, toll roads, highways, etc., is not possible, therefore you may encounter discrepancies between the mapping and your actual location. Please rely on your individual judgment in determining whether or not to follow a suggested Audi navigation plus route. Periodically the mapping is updated, and a new DVD will be required in order to maintain the latest navigational information available to us. These will be available for purchase from time to time at additional cost. Consult your dealer or visit our navigation.com/audi website (link below) or call 1-800-FOR-AUDI for details.

The Audi parking system (APS) makes parking easier. An intermittent warning tone indicates how far the car is from an obstacle. As the distance decreases, the warning tones become faster. It first sounds when the car is just over 5 feet from the obstacle and sounds continuously when only 8 inches remain. The APS uses ultrasonic sensors that can be installed at the rear as well as the front of the car, depending on the model. It can be switched off via a button on the instrument panel for special situations such as stop-and-go traffic. When the reverse gear is selected, APS is switched on automatically.

Audi parking system advanced with rearview camera makes parking easier. Using ultrasonic sensors to measure distance, Audi parking sysem emits an intermittent warning tone to indicate how far the car is from an obstacle. As the distance decreases, the warning tone becomes faster. It first sounds when the car is a little over 5 feet from the obstacle, becoming continuous when only 8 inches remain. Optional front Audi parking system (available only on the A8 L) can be switched off in special situations such as stop-and-go traffic. Rear Audi parking system switches on automatically when the vehicle is in reverse.

Active at speeds over 19 mph, Audi side assist system monitors the blind spot areas, as well as fast-approaching vehicles, at a range of about 150 ft. to the rear of the car. If Audi side assist identifies another vehicle, it informs the driver via LED lights in the exterior mirror. The driver has the ability to disable this feature.

The Audi A8 is the first North American car with an aluminum body built according to the Audi space frame principle. ASF is a high-strength aluminum frame structure into which the panels are integrated so that they also perform a load-bearing function. In conjunction with high-strength aluminum sheet, the aluminum body is characterized by exceptional stiffness and above-average crash protection, yet at the same time by substantially lower weight. Advantages for the driver: greater safety, increased performance, improved handling, lower fuel consumption, and ease of repair.

The signature LED daytime running lights and high-intensity headlights not only add a distinct look to the vehicle, they also improve visibility while using half of the energy of conventional bulbs. In addition, Audi adaptive headlights utilize input from the vehicle's steering and speed to pivot up to 15 degrees allowing you to see ahead in the dark by lighting up corners more effectively.

The interior and exterior mirrors with automatic dimming recognize glaringly bright headlight beams behind the car and darken the mirror glass automatically. An electronic control unit varies the darkening effect quickly and continuously according to actual ambient light conditions. This technology makes use of a transparent, electrically-conductive material that becomes increasingly impervious to light when an electric current is applied to it. A very thin layer of this material is sandwiched between the actual mirror reflector and the outer glass. The mirror also contains two photoelectric cells. One of these faces forward and determines the ambient light intensity. The second is in the rear-facing surface of the mirror, and reacts when a bright light strikes it from behind the car. If this light is significantly brighter than the ambient light intensity, the photoelectric cell generates the necessary electrical signal, the electrically-conductive layer darkens and the image in the mirror no longer dazzles the driver.
