Aviation Supplies & Academics, Inc. (ASA) develops and markets aviation supplies, software, and books for pilots, flight instructors, flight engineers, airline professionals, air traffic controllers, flight attendants, aviation technicians and enthusiasts. Established in 1947, ASA also provides ...
A nonmetallic screwdriver or socket wrench used to adjust trimmer and padder capacitors to align the circuits in a piece of electronic equipment.
Industry:Aviation
A nonretractable landing gear. A fixed landing gear cannot be retracted into the aircraft structure to decrease the wind resistance.
Industry:Aviation
A nonreusable fitting installed on a flexible hose by forcing the material of the fitting into the hose. Swaged fittings are also installed on rigid fluid lines used in high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

A normally open, magnetically closed switch in the output circuit of a DC generator, between the generator and the battery. When the generator voltage is lower than that of the battery, a spring holds the reverse-current relay contacts open, and the generator is not connected to the battery.
As soon as the generator voltage rises above that of the battery, an electromagnet in the relay closes the contacts and connects the generator to the battery. The more current flowing from the generator to the battery, the tighter the contacts are pulled together.
When the generator voltage drops below that of the battery, reverse current flows from the battery to the generator. When reverse current flows, the magnetic field holding the contacts closed is cancelled, and a spring pulls the relay contacts open. This disconnects the generator from the battery. If a DC generator control circuit did not incorporate a reverse-current relay, the battery would discharge through the generator when the generator voltage was lower than that of the battery.

A NOT AND logic gate having two or more inputs and one output. The output is a logic zero (NOT one) if all of the inputs are logic one. The symbol for a NAND gate is the same as for an AND gate, followed by a small circle to show that the output is inverted. (Its logic condition is changed.)
Industry:Aviation
A NOT gate is an inverter. A NOT gate has one input and one output, and the logic condition at the output is always opposite the logic condition at the input. The symbol for a NOT gate is a triangle (the symbol for a buffer), followed by a small circle to show that the output is inverted.
Industry:Aviation
A NOT OR logic gate that has two or more inputs and one output. The output is logic zero (NOT one) when the signal on any one of the inputs is logic one. The symbol for a NOR gate is the symbol for an OR gate, followed by a small circle, to show that the output of the gate is inverted. (Its logic condition is changed.)
Industry:Aviation
A notice containing information (not known sufficiently in advance to publicize by other means) concerning the establishment, condition, or change in any component (facility, service, or procedure of, or hazard in the National Airspace System), the timely knowledge of which is essential to personnel concerned with flight operations.
Industry:Aviation
A notice placed on an aircraft in plain sight of the appropriate crew member to give information pertinent to the operation of the aircraft. Operations limitations as well as maintenance specifics are often displayed by placards.
Industry:Aviation
A notice sent by the FAA to certain interested maintenance personnel, identifying problems with aircraft that have been gathered from Malfunction and Defect Reports.
These are problems being studied at the time the Airworthiness Alert is issued yet not fully evaluated at the time the material goes to press.
