A series of experimental high-performance aircraft engines built with U.S. Army and Navy financing in the early 1930s. The goal of these engines, which had been unattainable up to that time, was to develop one horsepower for each cubic inch of piston displacement.
Industry:Aviation
A series of flare-type fittings for fluid lines installed in an aircraft. AN fittings have a 37° flare angle and a short shoulder between the ends of the flare cone and the first thread.
Industry:Aviation
A series of flare-type fittings used in some of the older aircraft hydraulic systems. AC fittings have a 35° flare cone, and they may be distinguished from a similar appearing AN fitting by the threads on an AC fitting extending all the way to the flare cone, while there is a slight shoulder between the cone and the first thread of an AN fitting. The procedures described in this advisory circular are considered by the FAA to be acceptable data and can be submitted to them for approval for specific repairs.
Industry:Aviation
A series of levers connected in such a way that the output of one lever is used as the input of another. Compound levers are used to multiply force.
Industry:Aviation
A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to a point from which a landing may be made visually.
Industry:Aviation
A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to a point from which a landing may be made visually. An instrument approach procedure is prescribed and approved for a specific airport by competent authority.
Industry:Aviation
A series of step-by-step instructions that tells a computer exactly how it is to receive data, store it, process it, and deliver it to the user.
Industry:Aviation
A series of values for resistors and capacitors, selected by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) and the military services. The steps between the values are chosen, so the difference between any two steps is essentially the same percentage as the difference between any other two steps. The use of preferred values allows the most complete coverage of the needed values, with a minimum number of components.
Industry:Aviation
A series winding in a compound-wound DC generator. The coils of the compensating winding are embedded in the faces of the field poles, and their magnetic fields assist the fields from the interpoles to effectively cancel the field distortion caused by armature current.
Industry:Aviation
A series winding on the voltage regulator coil in a vibrator-type generator control unit. Current flowing through the accelerator winding produces a magnetic field which helps hold the points tightly closed against the force of a spring. As soon as the points begin to open, this field collapses, and the spring snaps the points open quickly.
