A small, hand-held air turbine fitted with a chuck to hold a twist drill. The housing in which the turbine is mounted has a trigger-actuated air valve that controls the speed of the turbine by controlling the amount of air flowing through it. Pneumatic drill motors are used in aircraft manufacture and maintenance because they are safer than electric drill motors, and they give the operator excellent control of the drill speed. Pneumatic drill motors do not overheat when they are stalled.
Industry:Aviation
A small, low-voltage battery used in some of the older, battery-powered, tube-type radios to provide a grid bias voltage for some of the vacuum tubes. C-batteries have generally been replaced by a method of biasing the tubes with the voltage drop across a resistor.
Industry:Aviation
A small, metalworking punch used to make an impression in a piece of metal to hold the point of a twist drill so it can start cutting without walking over the surface of the metal. The point of a center punch forms an angle of approximately 60°. This angle allows the drill to start cutting easily.

tab
A small, movable control hinged to the trailing edge of one of an airplane’s primary flight control surfaces. Tabs can be used to help the pilot move the primary control surface, or they can be used to produce an aerodynamic load on the primary surface that trims the aircraft for a hands-off flight condition.
Industry:Aviation
A small, self-contained hydraulic system that consists of a reservoir, pump, selector valves, and relief valves. The powerpack is removable from the aircraft as a unit to facilitate maintenance and service.
Industry:Aviation
A small, spring-steel ring that can be fitted into a groove in a shaft or in a groove cut into the walls of a hole. The spring action of the ring holds it tightly in the groove.
Industry:Aviation
A small, swiveling or steerable wheel mounted at the aft end of the fuselage of an airplane equipped with a conventional landing gear. The tail wheel supports the rear end of the airplane when it is on the ground.
Industry:Aviation
A small, vigorous whirlwind, usually of short duration. Dust devils are made visible by dust, sand, and debris picked up from the ground.
Industry:Aviation
A small, wood-cutting handsaw that uses a replaceable blade only about 1/8-inch wide. The blade is held under tension in the jaws of a U-shaped frame that has a handle in line with the blade. Coping saws are used to cut curves in thin wood.
Industry:Aviation
A smooth curve that has no sharp changes in its direction.
