A term that refers to all the facts available about a situation or project. Data can be accumulated and changed into a form usable in a computer. The computer then processes the data to produce records and projections. The word data is actually the plural form of datum, but it is often used as though it were singular.

A term used by air traffic controllers to taxi an aircraft on the runway opposite to the traffic flow. The aircraft may be instructed to back-taxi to the beginning of the runway or at some point before reaching the runway end for the purpose of departure or to exit the runway.

A term used for safety wire. Lockwire is soft brass, stainless steel, or galvanized low-carbon steel wire, used to safety fasteners so they will not loosen by vibration. Lockwire is passed through holes in the fasteners and twisted, then secured to a hole in an adjacent fastener or to a hole in the structure. Twisted lockwire should always pull on the fastener in the direction that tries to tighten it.

A term used for the middle-point, or median. Mean sea level is the midpoint between the highest and lowest level of the sea. Mean values are used when measuring from a reference that moves, or changes, between specific limits.

A term used for the preservation of equipment or machinery. When something is mothballed, it is sealed so moisture cannot get into it.
Desiccant materials (materials that absorb moisture) are packed inside the equipment to absorb moisture from the air sealed in it, and the outside is covered with whatever type of protection is appropriate. Airplanes and ships that have been declared surplus by the military are often mothballed and stored in case they are ever needed again.
