A type of light military aircraft made popular during World War II because of its ability to land and takeoff from unimproved terrain. Liaison aircraft have been replaced by helicopters.
Industry:Aviation
A type of lightweight, nonenergizing, hydraulically operated aircraft brake. A synthetic rubber tube is installed around the brake housing mounted on the landing gear axle, and blocks of brake lining material are held pressed against the expander tube with flat metal springs. The brake drum, mounted inside the wheel, rotates around the linings. When the brake pedal is depressed, hydraulic fluid is forced into the tube. The tube expands and forces the brake blocks against the rotating brake drum. This force applies enough friction to the drum to slow the rotation of the wheel.
Industry:Aviation
A type of linkage between atoms in a chemical compound in which an electron is shared by two atoms. The sharing of the electron holds the atoms together. Two atoms of hydrogen share electrons with one atom of oxygen to form one molecule of water, a stable chemical compound.
Industry:Aviation
A type of liquid whose molecules can be arranged by electrical charges in such a way that polarized light cannot pass through a film of the liquid. Liquid crystal is used in the displays for calculators, clocks, watches, and in the new generation of aircraft instruments.
Industry:Aviation
A type of logic used in some digital electronic circuits. In negative logic, the lower of two voltage levels represents the condition of one, or yes, while the higher voltage represents the condition of zero, or no.
Industry:Aviation
A type of lubricating oil tank used with a gas turbine engine. A saddle-mount tank is shaped in such a way that it fits around the curvature of the engine compressor case in much the same way a saddle fits a horse.
Industry:Aviation
A type of machine screw with a flat head in line with the length of the screw. A thumbscrew can be turned by hand by gripping the flat head between the thumb and first finger. Thumbscrews are used to lock one part to another when the parts must be locked and released without the use of tools.
Industry:Aviation
A type of machine-sewed seam in which the edges of the fabric are folded back and a double row of stitches used to form the seam. The stitches pass through three thicknesses of material.
Industry:Aviation
A type of machine-sewed seam in which the edges of the two pieces of fabric are folded together, and a double row of stitches passes through four thicknesses of the material.
Industry:Aviation
A type of machine-sewed seam used to join two pieces of aircraft fabric. The edge of one piece of fabric overlaps the edge of the other, and one or two rows of stitches are used to join the pieces. In a plain overlap seam, the thread passes through two layers of fabric.
